Safely Demonstrating Gracie Self-Defense

Jiu-Jitsu was originally designed as a self-defense style Martial Art and it is designed so that even the smaller weaker person can use leverage and technique to overcome an attacker.  Naturally, the USA wellness center chose Cardella to launch a workshop for their faculty and staff.  “In order to better prepare the community we started from the top of the food chain – the support system of the university.” say’s Cardella.  If the forerunners of the university build awareness then the whole university is stronger and more prepared as a whole.

Phil Cardella has launched Self-Defense Seminars all across the nation including sprawling urban communities like Jacksonville, Austin, Houston, New York, Cleveland, Columbus, Washington, Lihue, Honolulu, and El Paso.  Not only has he dedicated his time to enriching the community he is a former marine and  a level 1, 2, and 3 Army Combative’s instructor.  He regularly makes trips to teach hundreds of our armed forces out of places like Fort Hood.

Cardella hopes to continue enlightening and empowering more Faculty, Staff, and Student’s at the University, as well as local residents in the near future.  We live next to one of the most crime filled cities in the nation, Jacksonville, Florida, and we cannot ignore the need for self reliance and prevention in our community.

Brian Cimins ran another on schedule Grapplers Quest event this weekend in Coral Springs FL. Our fledgling academy brought 4 competitors representing Relson Gracie St. Augustine Team.  Laura Atkins, Brian DeAngelis, Edwin Wandemburg, and Hayden Whetstone stepped into battle against world champions and seasoned competitors bringing home a total of 4 medals to the ancient city; two Silvers and two Bronze. This was the first tournament for the competitors under Phil Cardella’s instruction and at their belt levels.  It was a great experience, and we are continuing to train hard as well as tighten up some things before our next competition.

“Tournament preparation is hard work, and champions are not made overnight” says Cardella. It takes  months of hard work, good health and preparation to even be competitive in those ranks. In order to rise to the top, personal sacrifice and focus has to be demonstrated for weeks before the event. Tenacity, follow through, and determination are all a prerequisite on this battle field.

Competition is nothing new to our team and our head instructor, Phil Cardella. He fought in both the Las Vegas light weight Black Belt tournament and the 16 man Dream Division tournament in Bayonne New Jersey. After seeing his students, Phil Cardella was inspired to agree to another “Super Fight” for Grapplers Quest again.

This weekend was a humble start for our academy as a team in competition, but it created momentum, something new businesses always need.  With the experience and wisdom of a battle hardened Champion instructor you can expect consistently great results from this Academy in the future.   Relson Gracie himself and several Black Belts were not surprised to hear the results after the dust settled from this weekend. Adjustments and progression have already begun after the competitors have returned back to town and back to the Academy where preparation for success is created. The team returned with no injuries and a new found focus.

Both have prior tournament experience and future competition aspirations and take a studious approach to learning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. They demonstrate high levels of control and humility on the mats; And also take the time to help newer students learn the Relson Gracie system and share their love for the sport.

Remo is the founder and president at the North Florida Grappling Club at the University of North Florida and continues to pass on our teams knowledge there.  Brian is an avid notetaker and can regularly be found training  twice a day, as much as 5 hours!

RECENT NEWS: Three promotions have been awarded this month: Frank Stevens promoted to Blue Belt on September 12th, Edwin Wandemberg and Steve Dahn  earned a stripe on their blue belts on September 14th. It takes motivation, dedication, and lots of hard work to earn a new belt or stripe.

At Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu St. Augustine, students are tested for promotions everyday when they step on the mats.  Students must earn their promotions!  We do not run a “belt factory”and we do not charge belt testing fees.  A student must meet certain standards before being promoted, and earning a new belt or stripe is dependent upon how many hours a student trains and their personal potential.  It does not matter if the student goes to competition, if they have determination, sportsmanlike attitude, and focus before they even step on the mats they will succeed.

Gabriel Obiedo

Gabriel Obiedo, a long time student and 1 Stripe Brown belt under Master Relson Gracie and Phil Cardella visited our Academy last week all the way from Austin, TX.  He came to St. Augustine for the sole purpose of training, hanging out at the beach, paddleboarding, fishing, and eating awesome food prepared by Chef Cardella.

Obiedo works for the Austin, Tx Fire department; he is a hard working dedicated student and a well conditioned athlete.  Gabe was generous of his time around the School, ready to lend a helpful hand wherever it was needed.  His commitment to the team and dedication to training went above and beyond what was expected. It was great to have one of Cardella’s  high ranking students on the mats, and those who attended the Academy last week got a taste of Gabe’s hardcore warmups!
